Our Kids-Only Top Ten Tips For A Fun Family Gathering!

Planning a family reunion can be tons of fun and sometimes as fun as the Reunion! Here are our top-ten tips that will help make planning the perfect event super easy!

  1. Start Planning Early!
If you want to have a family reunion in June, start planning in November! You'll have a better shot at getting Grandma and Grandpa and maybe even your favorite aunts and uncles to come if you start planning early. Plus, try to pick a date in the summer when you and your cousins are out of school!

  2. Plan the Perfect Activities!
Make sure to plan some activities that will get your family talking and laughing! Play "20 Questions" or ask What was Great-Grandpa's first job? or Who traveled the furthest to this reunion? Or, you can have a pool party or sports like softball or volleyball games to get everyone involved! Most importantly, leave holes in the schedule for free time and spontaneous fun that just happens from your time together.

  3. Get Connected to Your Family!
Call, write, email or IM your family to schedule your reunion around other family events such as graduations, weddings or anniversaries! Ask them what kind of reunion would work best for them. Maybe a barbecue? Picnic at a park? A get-together at Grandma's house? A weekend cruise or resort getaway?

  4. Get Some Helpers!
Get other kids and grownups in your family together to help you brainstorm fun ideas! Ask everyone to email, IM or text you their favorite ideas! And on the big day, lots of helping hands means the jobs are divided leaving more time for everyone to have fun!

  5. Get Talkin'!
Let your family know about the reunion as soon as possible! Ask Mom or Dad for your family's Holiday card list and go from there. You can post your announcement free at FamilyReunion.com and keep it up to date as plans change. Put together a cool flier or a letter and email it to all those you hope will come. Be sure to print some and get them in the mail for relatives that don't have computers. And include a map to your event!

  6. Reunion Routes
A big part of planning a reunion is giving them info to help get there. What's the best route to take? Is there highway construction you can help them avoid? Give them a few choices of hotels from affordable to nicer. Chances are, you know the area better than your out-of-town family members.

  7. Relatives Remixed
Mix it up by making sure to seat people where they'll have the best chance to mingle and get to know more distant relatives they don't know well or maybe haven't even met.

  8. Entertainment – with the TV off?
Games and activities that get everyone in the same area prove the most entertaining – and memorable. Get a member from each branch of the family to stand up and share something about their family. A prepared couple paragraphs or something they think of at the moment. It could be something from the past or right now. Hardships, achievements or trivia. What was Great-Grandpa's first job? Who traveled the furthest to this reunion? A pool party or team activities like volleyball can be fun. Hey, how about volleyball in the pool?

  9. Remember The Cleanup!
Make cleanup fun by getting volunteers in advance to help with picking up at someone's home, a park or other public area. Whoever cleans up the fastest or fills the most garbage bags gets a totally cool prize! After all the crazy fun everyone's had, you'll have a larger more willing crew than waiting to get help with cleanup as festivities are winding down.

  10. Say Thank You!
Mail or email a thank you note to everyone who made this gathering a memory everyone will cherish for a lifetime. Get creative and send people photos from the event!

Top 5 Tips for Fantastic Family Reunions at Sea!

1. Get Everyone Excited About Shipboard Activities Before You Board
From grandkids to grandparents, cruise ships offer so many activities that you'll be hard pressed to choose! Even before you step aboard, you can start planning for success.Make a long list of all the activities and facilities the ship has to offer. Sort them by using categories like "family fun" or by age group or gender. Distribute this list and you'll get everyone super-excited as they anticipate the cruise. This will also help ensure that no one feels overwhelmed once the ship sets sail. There may be a world of possibilities to choose from, but now they'll have an idea of what they want in advance! Today's kid's camps are truly fabulous. Campers are divided by age group and will experience everything from onboard playgrounds and wading pools to fun activities, arts & crafts, movies, and computer games! Some ships even have mini-water parks onboard, too! Teens and adults will find a bevy of activity options – from the adventurous to the educational. What's more fu n than anything is when an activity is enjoyed by a mix of generations. We suggest you bring lots of film – and plenty of single-use cameras for the kids, too!

2. Pre-Arrange Shore-Side Activities, Too!
You can have so many fun adventures off the ship as well. We suggest that you plan ahead instead of purchasing these once onboard. CruisesOnly.com contracts with a special shore excursion company to give you this fabulous opportunity.Take a pulse for the most sought after activities that your family wishes to experience. Reserve tickets for the entire group in advance! This reduces any possibility of stress or disappointment on your cruise vacation. You'll get what you want, when you want it – and make even more magic family reunion memories!

3. Consider Using a Professional Group Escort
Cruise ship staff take great care of all cruise guests. However, groups often have special needs that require extra special attention and coordination. Planning a variety of ship and land activities, private functions, and dining accommodations for higher numbers of people adds complexity – we suggest including a professional group escort to accompany you. An escort is your key liaison to handle just about anything – whether the event is planned or spur-of-the moment.

He or she is trained to plan for the unexpected, troubleshoot, and use creativity to exceed expectations. Your escort will always be just a few steps away, but never a distraction. We encourage you to eliminate stress and just plain enjoy your family reunion! People take comfort in knowing that an expert is on-hand to help – something especially true for first-time cruisers.

4. Play Musical Chairs At Dinner Time
Dinner is wonderful time to reconnect with family members you've missed and spend time with just about everybody. Your tables will be reserved in advance so that you all dine together in the same area. Spice things up by sitting at different tables each night! You can even plan this in advance and actually place namecards before they arrive. Consider seating the kids together – not just with their own families! One night, put all the namecards in a bag and have random seating "assignments"! Or, after everyone has finished their main course (and before you order a scrumptious dessert), play musical chairs and switch seats!

5. Negotiate for a Complimentary Welcome Reception
Free cocktails, beverages, and snacks can be yours for the asking. Depending on the ship and sail date, you may be able to kick-off your family reunion at sea with a magnificent private party. What a great way to bring the whole family together the first or second day of your cruise vacation! This is also an excellent opportunity for you to review all the activities you have planned, and get everyone ready to have the time of their lives!
